The German Hotel and Restaurant Association (DEHOGA) has been offering a nationwide uniform classification system with the brand product “German Hotel Classification” since 1996. It is based on forerunner models from individual regional associations. German Hotel Classification is a dynamic, market-driven system of international standards and provides a meaningful grid across the entire portfolio of accommodation establishments in Germany.

In addition to German hotel classification, DEHOGA helped establish the nationwide German classification for guest houses, inns and bed and breakfasts (“G classification) in 2005. The system was developed in cooperation with the German Tourism Association (DTV) and was presented at the ITB in Berlin in 2005. The “G-classification” is aimed at businesses with a restaurant license or more than 8 guest beds, which have a maximum of 20 guest rooms and no hotel-like character.

In the past, it was not possible to convince many smaller licensed accommodation establishments to participate in the German hotel classification system. The reason: hotel criteria from the conference, wellness or restaurant areas could not be assigned to guesthouses and bed and breakfasts. With the “G-classification”, there is now an adequate rating system which has been in place since 2005. This means that guest houses, inns and bed and breakfasts can also be decorated with meaningful stars for their type of business. In order to differentiate the individual systems, these stars are always preceded by a “G”. Private rooms are marked by a “P”, according to the DTV classification, and an “F” in front of the stars indicates a holiday apartment or holiday home.

The organisational implementation of the German Hotel Classification as well as the German Classification for guesthouses, inns and bed and breakfasts is the responsibility of the regional DEHOGA associations. Normally, they commission their own companies to carry out this task. In many cases, DEHOGA’s regional associations have entered into cooperation with their tourist organisations or with their regional Chambers of Trade and Commerce. HOGA Berlin Service GmbH is responsible for the classification of accommodation establishments located in the zone area of the Hotel and Restaurant Association Berlin e.V.
